Long-distance triathlon glossary·Overr

Overreaching : acute reversible overload

Load

Short-term intense overload state: performance dips, recovery in days to 2 weeks.

Functional overreaching is intentional overload followed by a taper, triggering supercompensation and gains. Non-functional overreaching is more severe, lasting over 2 weeks without improvement: it is the precursor to overtraining syndrome. Warning signs: persistent performance decline, fatigue that does not lift after 48 h of rest, falling HRV. Unlike overtraining (months of recovery), non-functional overreaching typically resolves in 2-4 weeks of relative rest.

In TriPaced:

In TriPaced, CTL/ATL/TSB tracking detects non-functional overreaching signals: a persistently very negative TSB (−30 and below over multiple weeks) paired with declining performance is the cue to reduce load immediately.
