Long-distance triathlon glossary·FCmax

Maximum heart rate : HRmax

Load

The absolute maximum heart rate your heart can reach, used as a reference to calibrate all cardiac training zones.

HRmax is individual and declines with age (rough formula: 220 − age, but with ±10-15 bpm variability). Reliable measurement methods: (1) field test : progressively harder sprints on a hill at the end of a hard session, last sprint all-out; (2) 5-10 min maximal time trial : the last 30 seconds usually reveal the peak. HRmax is not a fitness indicator: it's genetic and stable year to year. An HRmax of 175 is not 'better' than 165 : only the distribution of zones matters.

In TriPaced:

In TriPaced, HRmax is entered during onboarding (or in Settings). It calibrates all your HR zones (Z1 to Z5) and your heart rate reserve for each discipline. If your actual HRmax differs from the default estimate, update it : the error propagates to all prescribed intensities.
